How to Produce a Radio Piece
I was listening to some podcast over the weekend, and there was a mention of radioproject.org. I was intrigued and started to poke around the site. I came across this list of suggestions of how to produce a piece for radio play. The suggestions translate well for podcasts. The subjects covered are:
- Create Story Idea
- Start a Folder
- Record and Research
- Log Tape
- Paper Edit
- Dub and Edit Tape
- Sequence Tape
- Write Script
- Mix Narration and Tape

I suggest you head on over and give the resource page a read. It’s good stuff.

Michael, I have a question. How do you produce a podcast piece for the radio? Many podcasters mention how they’d like to get a piece on the radio. What do radio stations look for, what formats, how do you contact them, how do you marry the two medias.

Interesting question. From my experience this crossover is currently very difficult. Most radio stations program from one of the networks (EWTN or Relevant). In these cases, they are not looking for programming. Of the independents (those who glean their programming from a variety of sources) you will need to contact each of them separately to gage interest. My experience is they are not open to indie production. There is a lot of mistrust of productions that do not come from either major ministries (Steve Woods’ or Ralph Martins’) or directly from EWTN.
You could approach either Relevant Radio or EWTN directly. I have contacts at both. If you contact me directly, we can discuss it more.
