Talkshoe and Twitter

April 2nd, 2007 by Michael Kreidler

I have been listening to a very good podcast with the flashy title of ‘Entrepeneurship and Business Course’. It is hosted by an adjunct professor at Carnegie Mellon University, Mark Juliano. What is interesting about this podcast is it is not a recording of the live classes. Instead he has adapted the material for podcast. He has posted his PowerPoint slides on his website. He considers this a parallel to his live class. Also, he is one of the principles at Talkshoe.com.

Talkshoe.com has the potential of being revolutionary. While there are many aspect to the service (currently in beta and free) is to provide podcasts the ability to take live questions. As I understand the service, the podcaster posts the date and time of the recording of their next show. Talkshoe members can then login and listen, send IM questions, or ask voice questions the podcaster. This is an amazing development. Podcasts allow for time-shifted content and Talkshoe now provides a way to have live interaction. It has been a while since something has made me say ‘wow’. Talkshoe has done just that: “Wow”. I do not produce any live shows, so please let me know what you thing of the service.

The iPadre invited me to be a Twitter friend. I have heard a lot about this new social networking site. I have been playing with it for the last day and I still don’t quite ‘get it’. I will have to continue to play with it and see where it takes me. In the meantime, enjoy a candid photo of the iPadre himself.

iPadre’s New Podcast

April 1st, 2007 by Michael Kreidler

I got this email from the iPadre:

Just wanted to let you know. I have a new podcast to teach the Latin chants and other beautiful Latin hymns for the Mass. The Chant Cast is now available on iTunes or you can just go to my website.

I haven’t checked it out yet. When you do, let us know what you think

Why is Catholic programming so boring?

March 23rd, 2007 by Michael Kreidler

There is a very good posting over at CatholicSphere entitled ‘Why is Catholic programming so boring?’ The commentary is right on. It is unfortunate that there exists such an unmet spiritual hunger for quality Catholic programming. This is what Disciples with Microphones is supposed to be about - to meet this need and train others how to do so. We have a lot of work to do. Maybe this will wake us up a bit. Please take the time to read the posting. Unfortunately, anyone who is likely to read it is not the ones who need to hear the message. Oh well, I’m just glad Matt from CatholicSphere ’said’ it.

In my own quest to bring some high quality Catholic programming, I have been working with a group on a new podcast called Playing with Fire. We just released episode #3. I’d love for you to listen and give me your input.

I am also in production of a podcast with the working title of ‘Roodscreen Radio: the journey’s of a part time mystic’. I am conducting interviews with people who have had a strong experience of the divine in their life. I did my first interview and am in the process of editing it. I want to have six under my belt before I release them as a podcast.

I’d love to hear what you are up to.

Provoke Podcast

March 20th, 2007 by Michael Kreidler

Back in November of 2005 I posted about Provoke Radio. It’s programming focuses on peace and social justice. I spoke with the producer back then about podcasting. I was not able to assist her at that time but in my free-range wanderings I tripped upon the Provoke site and decided to look around. I noticed that they are now podcasting.

They have not made subscribing automatic but it is easy enough by posting:

http://www.provokeradio.com/podcast.cfm

Into your podcatcher of choice.

When I did this I was pleased that they have made much of their back catalogue available (at least back to 2004). Their podcast is a welcome addition to the Catholic podosphere.

Note: John Lamansky reminded me how to locate the show’s url in iTunes. You can grab the podcast directly into iTunes using:

Thanks John.

Inside Home Recording Reviews

March 2nd, 2007 by Michael Kreidler

A few weeks ago I had the occasion to spend too much time in my car. I brought along my mp3 player and attempted to catch up on some shows. One of the shows that I kept meaning to spend some quality time with was Inside Home Recording (IHR). I had listened to one of their shows a short while before, and really liked it.

During my car time, I caught episode #36. The show was enjoyable, but their reviews of the Samson’s Zoom H4 and M-Audio’s MicroTrack 24/96 field recorders were outstanding. I contacted the guys over at IHR and asked if I could strip out the reviews and post them. They quickly got back to me and pointed out that the casts were released with Creative Commons licenses that allowed me to do just that.

This evening I finally took the time. Below you will find the links to the reviews. I also suggest you take a listen to IHR, it is a great resource.

Playing with Fire Podcast

February 28th, 2007 by Michael Kreidler

PwF Podcast

I have been working on producing a new podcast called Playing with Fire. It is the brainchild of Dr. Bill Thierfelder who is the President of Belmont Abbey College in Charlotte, NC. It is a sports podcast which explore the integration of the spiritual, physical, and mental aspects of sport.

It has been a great project on which to work. I am very pleased with the final product. You can access it directly here. As of the writing of this post, the website for the project <http://www.reclaimthegame.com> did not yet have the podcasting links enabled. This should change soon.

I’d love to receive feedback on ways to improve the show from a production point of view. I hope you enjoy the show.

Lake Wobegon goes podcast

February 20th, 2007 by Michael Kreidler

From Lifehacker:

“Don’t have time to sit through A Prairie Home Companion just to hear Garrison Keillor’s News from Lake Wobegon? Or maybe you’re never near a radio at the right time. No matter: Now you can get the segment as a podcast.

Keillor’s long-running, whimsical show tells the stories of that fictional town, where “all the women are strong, all the men are good-looking, and all the children are above average.” Each segment runs 15-20 minutes. If you’ve ever purchased a Lake Wobegon collection on tape or CD, now you can stockpile the podcasts without spending a dime.”

The Reincarnation of Catholic/Mormon?

February 15th, 2007 by Michael Kreidler

I wrote to Rob and Sarah a month or so ago to ask what was up with the Catholic Mormon Podcast (CMP). It was early January and I’d lost touch with what CMP was up to. I took a look at their site and they hadn’t casted since September. Was this a case of podfading or was something else up?

Today, I made my way back to the CMP site and noted they are looking for feedback as to what their next step should be. My take is that there are several casters who would like to continue contributing to the ‘podosphere’ but are experiencing burnout. It takes a lot to do a weekly show. I think there are enough experienced casters now, that having a magazine format would be practical. Imagine an ocassional cast from CMP, the Catholic Cast, or Life on Fire. If there were enough collaborators, then each podcaster could produce their short pieces (5 minutes or so) as their schedule allows. The tyranny of the deadline could be past them. All that is needed is a uniting theme (for the collaborative podcast), a host, and a producer.

That’s my three cents. What do you think?
