1-Click Podcast Subscriptions For The Microsoft Zune

October 28th, 2007 by Michael Kreidler

From Podcasting News:

Podcaster, mobilecasting guru and Zune Podcast Programming Manager Rob Greenlee has announced 1-click podcast subscriptions for the Zune portable media player.

The 1-click process will launch the Zune Marketplace software and add the podcast subscription to the user’s collection. The process will work best if the Zune user already has the new Zune Marketplace software loaded on a Windows PC. If not installed, the user will be prompted to download the software. The podcast feed does not need to be in the Zune Marketplace for the link to work.

How To Set Up 1-Click Podcast Subscriptions For The Zune

Create the 1-click link URL using this format:

zune://subscribe/?PodcastTitle=PodcastRSSFeedURL

Here is a working example:

zune://subscribe/?wallstrip=http://feeds.feedburner.com/wallstrip

In this example, PodcastTitle is wallstrip and PodcastFeedURL is http://feeds.feedburner.com/wallstrip

Spaces between words in the PodcastTitle will work fine.

Here is Microsoft’s official hyperlink image for use for Zune 1-click subscription process:

Zune 1-click podcast subscription

“We are building a great podcast service offering,” adds Greenlee, “that should more than fill the needs of podcasters and Zune 4, 8, 30 and 80 users.”

Learn To Podcast With Blubrry

June 16th, 2007 by Michael Kreidler

I received an email moments ago regarding an event that will take place next week. I wanted to share it with you:

Good day all. I have scheduled a “learn to podcast” session on the TalkShoe service for Wednesday, June 20th at 9PM Eastern Time in the US. This is a new initiative that we would like to continue on a monthly basis. Since this is the first time out we will keep it pretty loose. Future sessions will have specific topics and possibly guest speakers.

All skill levels (from early beginners to podcast experts) are very welcome. My hope is that we can help those new to podcasting to get started while continuing to learn from each other.

For those interested in joining us head over to the TalkCast profile where you will find information on how to participate in the session. You have the following options for participation:

  1. Just listen from the website
  2. Call in on the phone.
  3. Download the TalkShoe live application to listen, talk and chat.

If you can’t make it to the session you can still listen later as TalkShoe archives recordings for streaming and downloading later.

Anyone who has questions about the session can feel free to email me at

marketing@rawvoice.com.

Kind Regards,

Rob Safuto

Blogger and Podcaster Magazine

June 12th, 2007 by Michael Kreidler

I have been wondering why there is only Podcast User Magazine occupying the ‘podspace’ in publishing. There have been at least two other mags that just never seem to have gotten their act together to get much beyond issue 1. Still, something as hot as podcasting should have generated more magazines, ezines, and the like. Why only one? The reason, well, there’s more than one.

I discovered it in a round about way while ‘thumbing’ my way through issue #17 of Podcast User Magazine. I followed a link from the mag through an ad for the Podcast and New Media Expo and while on that site came across Blogger and Podcaster Magazine.

Sure, podcasting takes second fiddle, but the magazine is rather kewl. There are articles from and about the top names in new media. In thumbing through it, I was struck by the large number of articles I wanted to read. What’s great about the mag is there are three ways to consume it and two of them are free. The first is the online version, which is available for online viewing. I did not see a way to download the content. There is also free podcast. They divide the columns, articles, and such into separate episodes. I’m looking forward to giving a few a listen. You can either subscribe via iTunes or listen from the site. There is also an option to get a physical subscription for $79/12 issues (one year).

It is a welcome addition to the podspace. I hope you give them a look. Let me know what you think.

Fr. Seraphim Visits iJim’s Neighborhood

April 23rd, 2007 by Michael Kreidler

I received an email earlier today from Dr. Jim. He asked me to post a little something about the fact that Fr. Seraphim (of Catholic:Under the Hood fame) spoke to Dr. Jim’s podcasting class. What made this encounter a bit more special is the fact Doc Jim used a service I’d not encountered before - Ustream.TV.

I went to take a look at the Ustream.TV website to learn more about what it is. This is what they told me:

What is Ustream.TV?

The engine that powers LIVE streaming

With Ustream.TV you can:

  • WATCH - LIVE Concerts, Shows
  • MEET - Video and Speed Date
  • CONNECT - Conferences, Meetings
  • BROADCAST LIVE - Concerts, Shows, Around-the-town

I still don’t quite get it, but hey, I’m about as sharp as a bowling ball, so…

If you want to see the video, visit Doctor J’s (Dr. Jim’s) blog ‘How About This’ (one of many I suppose) and give the video a once over.

DJ Doctor J (that’s Dr. Jim’s rap handle) mentions the video “accidently” cuts off prematurely. I have it from good authority that he was forced to edit it due to the fact that Fr. Seraphim breaks out into some hardcore gangsta rap near the end of his presentation. This, of course, had to be edited out. This may just be a vicious rumor - but you decide.

I haven’t had the time to preview the video, so enter at your own risk.

Is ‘Good’ Enough for Catholic Media?

April 9th, 2007 by Michael Kreidler

I have been thinking about the state of Catholic media in our country. In speaking of Catholic media I cast the net broadly and include TV, terrestrial radio, internet radio, podcasts, magazines, newspapers, websites, satellite, blogs, and umm, well that’s about all I can think of. The question I am asking myself is what is the quality of this media. If I were to aggregate it and rank it as a whole, what grade would I give to it?

Catholic TV is practically non-existant as a broadcast medium and what is available is pretty bad. But, you say, what about EWTN? I am stepping into a quagmire here but I would say it is definately fine. I do not dispute that Mother brought the network about through blood sweat and tears and that God’s intervention allowed EWTN to be established and grow. I also admit that God has used the channel to bring about countless conversions. That is not my point. I assert the vast majority of the programming on EWTN is made up of talking heads. Sometimes the content is compelling and other times not. Hence the grade of a ‘C’ meaning it is average, or fine.

Print publications. What to do with these? The magazines range the spectrum of excellent to ‘line the bird cage’. I will not name names, not because I fear retribution, but simply I have not read enough of them to comment on them individually. I definately have read my share of both ‘liberal’ heresy and ‘conservative’ wack-jobiness to last me quite some time. I must say the visual quality of some of the magazines and newspapers has increased tremendously. Also, the content of some has increased significanly. However the presence of blatant heresy in some and hatred in others is alarming. Due to the increase of the quality of some I would give the whole catagory a ‘C-’.

Terrestrial radio. On the whole, Catholic terrestrial radio is pretty bad. First of all, much of the programing is repurposed EWTN television. Hearing statements such as “as you can see…” on the radio is just terrible. Also, the broadcast of the Holy Mass on radio is just bad radio. I would suggest that what most people want is to hear the readings and the homily. In that case, give us that. So if EWTN on television is a ‘C’ then EWTN on radio is a ‘C-’. Beyond that, when local stations do original programming, it is again a duplication of the talking heads. Sometimes it is engaging, often boring. The rise of some interesting programming is heartening, but the fact that no terrestrial station would pick it up speaks of a bigger problem. I suggest that the majority of terrestrial stations are afraid to take a chance on truly interesting shows. The fear seems to be not only the fear of making a bad programming choice, but a fear of saying or doing something wrong that is perceived to be ‘out of line with the Church’. These fears seem to drive all decisions in terrestrial radio. There is prudence and then there is fear. I see more fear than prudence. As a result we are left with pretty dull programming (with occasional notable exceptions). Terrestrial radio then, rates a solid ‘C-’. (I realize I have left out Relevant Radio. I have not consumed enough of their content to comment on it).

Podcasts. I am a bit biased here. I think this is where the most exciting and innovative stuff is going on. A few shows have gathered audiences in the tens of thousands and others in the tens. The quality of the shows is all over the place. From what I have experienced the programs ranges in quality (content and production value) from a B+ to an F. Some shows improve over time and others faded into the ether after just a few shows. What most podcasts do, however, is fall into the talking head catagory. Even the podcast I am currently producing Playing with Fire falls into this catagory. It does it well, but it is still mostly one person talking alone or with another person. Dr. Bill is a fascinating personality and had great stories and I think this helps it rise to the top in terms of production and content. Still, at our best I would rate it a ‘B’. Some of you who listen, may disagree, but hey, this is my posting. How do I rank all of the Catholic podcasts together? I’m going to give the catagory a C+. That’s a tough one though.

Satellite radio. There are currently two flavors of programming on Satellite radio: EWTN and the Catholic Channel (both on Sirius). As I have said, EWTN on radio is a ‘C-’ and I have not heard much of the Catholic Channel to rate it. I have heard everything from “It is so good, I listen to it every day” to “It spouts heresy and I have written Rome about it” as well as comments in between. For the time being, I am going to leave Satellite radio out of the mix. We shall see.

I have left out some catagories. I know that, but I have already gone long. Let’s see what I have:

Television       C

Print                C-

Radio               C-

Podcasts         C+

That seems to leave my report card on the state of Catholic media as a solid ‘C’. Am I being too harsh? I don’t think so.  I am saying Catholic media is average, good, fine. Nothing necessarily wrong with it, but nothing that allows it to rise above the mediocre media that is in abundance in our world. The question we must answer is how will Catholic media move from ‘good’ to ‘GREAT’?

That discussion must wait for another day.

Mr. SEO’s Advice to Raise Your Ranking

April 8th, 2007 by Michael Kreidler

An interesting article on how to optimize your podcasts for search engines from podcasting.about.com:

Special thanks to our first guest writer, Mr. Joe Balestrino, aka: Mr. SEO for this article.

How to Optimize your Podcast

Optimization can be a complex process. You have to research, optimize, track and maintain your SEO efforts constantly in order to stay on top of your game. When it comes to optimizing for podcasts, there is an entirely different set of rules than for traditional sites.

More and more people are getting involved with podcasting. The more people that become involved in podcasting, the steeper the competition for new listeners. Of course, there are things you can do to your podcast to make it unique. Production values, topics and the professionalism (or lack of professionalism) of the host or hosts can help separate your podcast from others in the same genre.

But what else can a podcaster do to increase listenership?

There are many directories that will allow you to submit your podcast. These directories are geared specifically for podcasters and people looking to find audio on a particular subject. There is a list of these directories updated regularly on my blog.

There are some sites that are transcribing the content of podcasts. One of them is Podscope. What is the best way to optimize a podcast from an audio standpoint, you may ask. Is there one? There isn’t a method, so to speak, to optimize a podcast in this way. I would suggest staying on topic as much as possible. It will help ensure that your audio is relevant to any search your podcast may come up for.

Depending on what you are using to create your blog entry, optimizing the podcast’s page is a good start. Sites such as PodOmatic allow each podcast episode to have its own page and unique URL. When choosing the title of your podcast, you need to keep in mind what relevant keyterms or keyphrases people would likely search for that could lead them to your podcast. For example, my podcast is about SEO or search engine optimization. If you type “SEO podcast” on Google, you’ll see me in the #1 position.

Next, think about what your major phrase or term might be. This should be something that reflects the overall purpose of your podcast, not necessarily aimed at a particular episode. Let’s say your podcast is about 80’s music. It would be nice if your URL had eightiesmusic.Com or podcast-on-eighties-music.net or something along those lines. This will give you brownie points with the search engines.

Creating your title is of the utmost importance. The title will never change. It needs to describe what your podcast is about, so think carefully before choosing it. If you need help, you can use to see how often a phrase is searched on Yahoo. This will give you a basic idea of what people are most likely to find you under. Keep in mind, however, that the more popular a term is, the more competition there will be.

The next step is to use those same words in the description of your podcast. Using our fictitious 80’s music podcast as an example, that might read, “Listen to retro music from the 80’s in our podcast. The selection of 80’s music for this podcast is chosen by our listeners.” See how we added both “80’s” and “music” twice? Don’t go overboard, but more than once never hurts.

What about posts/episodes? Can you optimize those posts? That can become difficult if you’re not well versed in optimizing content. The best advice I can give is to try to keep your episodes on one topic at a time. If one episode was about Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” album, it would be easier to optimize for if that were the only topic discussed. Writing about 100 - 200 words while repeating the keywords or keyphrases two or three times may be enough to drive in some traffic. Be sure you also type those keywords into the title and description on that particular episodes page.

Last but not least, try some traditional optimization methods to advertise your podcast. Create a site specifically for your podcast and optimize several pages for different keyphrases related to your show. Make sure each page has a link to where your traffic can easily download your podcast or view your catalog of past episodes. Create articles and submit them to article submission sites while pointing the one way backlinks you are creating back to the site. In our 80’s music example, you might write an article on the resurgence of popularity 80’s music is experiencing. This will help your podcast site rank well, and along with your optimized content, can bring new listeners to your show over time.

Make sure to visit Joe’s site for more great articles on SEO optimization.
