He escaped from Vietnam and immigrated to the United States at the age of 14. He graduated from Roosevelt High School in Seattle at the age of 16 and went on to earn his Bachelors of Science degree in Engineering at Washington State University. Holy Names was founded in 1880 and is the oldest continually operating school in the state of Washington. The school has received the Department of Education Blue Ribbon Award on four occasions. All engaged couples wishing to be married at the Cathedral take an in depth Focus Inventory that they later review with a team couple and with the pastor prior to setting a firm wedding date. Once the couples have set a firm wedding date they have several options for continued marriage preparation. Most couples attend a parish sponsored five week marriage preparation course with other engaged couples. Dennis DePape and Josie Gardner join Fr. Bob Camuso to talk about how St. Brendan Parish in Bothell, Washington incorporate the Called and Gifted Workshop for discernment and strategic planning at their parish. The St. Brendan community has flourished through the discernment of charisms within their parish. Catholic historian and teacher John Clapp returns to discuss the protestant reformation. John brings our attention to the anti-Catholic words that are used to describe that time in history and points out that many historians are now referring to the reformation as a revolution or revolt. John points out that the true reformers of the Church are the great saints. Author and public speaker Jan Alkire returns to the program to discuss Christian driving. Jan comments on the Vatican document that includes the "10 Commandments for Drivers" and urges each of us to consider whether we are leaving our Christian behavior behind when we get behind the wheel of a car. Emma Lamb was born 15 weeks premature and weighed 15 ounces at birth. She miraculously survived several operations and life threatening infections through the power of prayer. David and Elena talk about the spiritual and practical support that they received from their parish community at Holy Family Church in Kirkland, Washington. Emma recently celebrated her one year birthday! World War II veteran Harley Healy tells Fr. Bob his story of coming into the Catholic Church at age 82. Harley has been married for 60 years to his devoutly Catholic wife and supported her in raising their children in the Catholic faith. Harley started praying to God when Harley's grandson, Marshall, was sent to Afghanistan. In thanksgiving for his safe return Harley decided to go to church. He felt so welcome at St. Barbara's Church in Black Diamond, that he decided to become Catholic. Patty Bowman and Denise Carlascio join Fr. Bob to talk about the Pregnancy Support Ministry at St. James Cathedral in Seattle. Volunteers at the parish help pregnant women with grocery shopping, babysitting, house cleaning and other practical tasks. They work in partnership with Catholic Community Services and they are willing to train volunteers from other parishes who would like to start a similar program. Fr. Mike Bayard is the co-director of Magis: Alumni Committed for Mission, a program of Seattle University. This newly created program provides spiritual, service and leadership opportunities for graduates from Jesuit universities. Paul Dolejsi is the Pastoral Assistant for Music at Holy Rosary Church in west Seattle. Paul has provided music at various parishes around the archdiocese for over twenty five years. He currently is the director for two adult choirs, a children's choir and a teen ensemble. Listen in as he discusses the purpose of liturgical music and how it has changed over the years. Jeannie Berwick volunteers her time as the director of One Equal Heart Foundation, an organization established to support the Jesuit Mission for indigenous rights in Chiapas, Mexico. The Tseltal people have many needs. The focus of the foundation is to help the people with long range solutions to their problems. They are concentrating on sustainable agriculture, animal husbandry and nutrition. They also support work study scholarships for the youth who want to study beyond high school. Jeannie has led several delegations of people on a ten day journey to be present to the people of Chiapas. Laura Stanger and Chris Lystad are the co-creators of the Catholic Kids Catechism Club at St. John Vianney Church in Kirkland. They are joined on the program by Julia Maher, a seven year old student that attends the Catechism Club each week. This innovative program uses games and competition to teach grade school age children about their Catholic faith in a fun and exciting way. Kathy Riley is the Pastoral Assistant for Pastoral Care at St. Louise Parish in Bellevue, Washington. Kathy coordinates a support group for "re-singled and singles" at her parish. She works with a core group of volunteers to provide workshops and activities to support and offer opportunities for healing to people who are suffering from the loss of a spouse through death or divorce. John Clapp joins Fr. Bob for a second time to discuss the French Wars of Religion. John teaches Catholic Church History at Archbishop Murphy High School in Everett, Washington. Monsignor Robert Dempsey served as the editor of the English edition of L'Osservatore Romano, the official Vatican newspaper. He served as the editor for ten years, from 1991 to 2001. Deacon Scott Aikin is one of 21 recently ordained deacons for the Archdiocese of Seattle. Deacon Scott serves at St. Joseph Parish in Vancouver, Washington. He is a member of the Prairie Band Potawatomi Indian tribe. Deacon Scott is a lifelong Catholic, but his grandfather served as the tribes drum religion spiritual leader. Listen in to hear how Deacon Scott learned to incorporate his heritage into his Catholic faith. Fr. Bryan Dolejsi joins Father Bob Camuso for a third interview. Fr. Bryan has played and coached basketball for many years, most recently coaching the 8th Grade boys at Visitation School in Tacoma. Fr. Bryan discusses the best ways to reach our youth with the message of hope that Christ has for them.
